The Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1, securing their position at the top of World Cup Group F. This result helps them avoid a match against Brazil in the round of 32.

The match, held in Kansas City, saw the Dutch side establish a two-goal lead early on. The opening goal came from an unfortunate own goal by Ellyes Skhiri, who directed Denzel Dumfries‘ cross into his own net. Moments later, Brian Brobbey extended the lead with a close-range finish.

The first half concluded with the Netherlands holding a comfortable lead, largely controlling possession. The score from the Japan versus Sweden match in Arlington, which was 0-0 at that point, meant that if results held, the Dutch would advance as group winners.

Early goals and substitutions

The first goal for the Netherlands, an own goal by Ellyes Skhiri, occurred just four minutes into the game. This marked the 12th own goal of the tournament, equalling the record from 2018 before the group stage had concluded. Eight of these own goals have been against Arab national teams.

Shortly after the own goal, Brian Brobbey scored his third goal of the tournament, doubling the Netherlands’ advantage. This early scoring put Tunisia’s World Cup campaign in a difficult position.

Tunisia made several substitutions throughout the match. In the 68th minute, Ben Ouanes, Achouri, and Mahmoud entered the game, replacing Ben Hmida, Ben Slimane, and Khedira. Later, in the 75th minute, Firas Chaouat came on for Ismael Gharbi, who had an early chance to score in the second minute of the match. Sebastian Tounekti was the final substitution for Tunisia, replacing Hazem Mastouri in the 90th minute.

The Netherlands also made changes, with Summerville, Kluivert, and Koopmeiners coming on for Malen, Reijnders, and De Jong after the water break. Memphis Depay was introduced for Brian Brobbey in the 77th minute.

Match incidents and fan presence

Before kickoff, fans in Kansas City showed strong support for the Dutch team. A bus-led march through downtown Kansas City saw thousands of supporters, dressed in orange, filling the streets. Local television stations covered the event, with the city’s Public Works Department even wrapping three snowplows in orange to encourage people to move to sidewalks.

This display of orange was notable given that it is the colour of the Denver Broncos, a rival of the local Kansas City Chiefs. Local residents expressed their enthusiasm, with one lifelong Chiefs fan stating they had never worn orange before but did so for the Dutch team.

During the match, Hazem Mastouri scored for Tunisia with a header from a corner delivered by Hannibal Mejbri. However, the Netherlands responded with a header from Jan-Paul van Hecke, following a corner from Reijnders. This goal appeared to graze Ben Slimane‘s head on its way into the net, potentially making it another own goal.

The match also saw a free kick for the Dutch from about 25 yards in the 80th minute, which ultimately went wide. Tunisia’s Mejbri had a shot from distance in the 77th minute, which was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Verbruggen.

Despite earlier concerns about severe weather, including lightning, the shelter-in-place order at Kansas City Stadium was lifted before the game. While steady rain continued, the threat of lightning had passed, allowing the match to proceed without significant delay.

The Netherlands’ victory ensures they advance as group winners, having overcome Tunisia with a 3-1 scoreline.
