India’s T20 Squad Faces Selection Challenges
The Indian cricket team is set to embark on a new T20 era under captain Shreyas Iyer, with a two-match series against Ireland. The primary challenge for the team management revolves around the potential inclusion of teenage player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the starting eleven. This decision is particularly complex given the strong recent performances of established players.
Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old opener, has garnered significant attention following his performance in the IPL and a notable 94 runs off 29 balls for India A against Sri Lanka A in a tri-series one-day match at Dambulla. His potential international debut has created considerable interest.
The current top three for India in T20Is are Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. These players have demonstrated strong overall and recent T20 records, making their omission difficult. All three players scored fifties in the ICC T20 World Cup final win against New Zealand in March, which was India’s last assignment in the shortest format.
Impact of Sooryavanshi’s Potential Inclusion
Should the team management decide to include Sooryavanshi, who is an opener, either Sanju Samson or Abhishek Sharma would likely need to move down the batting order or be left out of the team. This presents a difficult choice, especially after a World Cup victory.
One option considered is moving Samson to the middle order, as he has previously batted at No. 4 and No. 5. However, these positions are currently expected to be filled by captain Shreyas Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma. This would leave No. 6 as the only available slot.
Traditionally, the No. 6 position is occupied by an all-rounder. India has several choices for this role, including Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Suryansh Shedge. Placing Samson at No. 6 could also mean India would field with only five bowlers, which might be a concern given the absence of key bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Varun Chakravarthy.
Samson has strong statistics as an opener, scoring 926 runs from 28 innings with three hundreds and four fifties, at a strike rate of 181.93. His strike rates at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are 121, 129, and 127 respectively. Abhishek Sharma, currently the No. 1 T20I batter, has also been effective as an opener, accumulating 1414 runs from 43 innings with two hundreds and 10 fifties, maintaining a strike rate of 192.38.
In the IPL 2026, Abhishek scored 563 runs, Kishan 602, and Samson 477. Additionally, Kishan recently scored 125 against Afghanistan in the second ODI at Lucknow. The presence of Sooryavanshi is expected to put pressure on both Samson and Abhishek to maintain their performance to secure their spots.
Series Details and Broader Implications
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer face a significant decision regarding whether to debut Sooryavanshi or maintain the existing winning combination. For Iyer, this series marks the beginning of his full-time captaincy, and he will be keen to secure a series win, building on his leadership experience from leading Kolkata Knight Riders to a title in 2024 and Punjab Kings to the IPL final a year later.
On the bowling front, India will feature a second-string line-up. This series, along with the subsequent one against England, provides an opportunity for these bowlers to prove their capabilities. Harshit Rana’s return from injury offers more options in the pace unit, but he faces competition from Prasidh Krishna and Prince Yadav. Prasidh Krishna recently took a career-best fifer in the third ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai.
The Ireland team will be without several key players due to injuries, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, and Curtis Campher. They will be led by new captain Lorcan Tucker and include players like George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, and Jai Moondra, who will be playing in their home conditions.
The India vs Ireland 2026 T20I series will begin on Friday, June 26, with the second match scheduled for Sunday, June 28. Both matches will start one hour earlier than initially planned, at 6 p.m. IST, with the toss taking place at 5:30 p.m. IST. This change was made to avoid a clash with the Indian women’s cricket team’s match against Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The matches will be held at the Stormont ground in Belfast and will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network channels in India, with livestreaming available on the SonyLiv website and app. The Indian squad includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Sharma, Suryansh Shedge, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, Prince Yadav, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The Ireland squad comprises Lorcan Tucker (captain), Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Matthew Humphreys, Gavin Hoey, Matthew Hollard, Liam McCarthy, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, and Reuben Wilson.
The first match is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026.
