The winners of the upcoming World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain will be presented with championship rings, a new tradition for the tournament. This marks the first occasion such an honour will be bestowed in a FIFA competition. The rings are inspired by a long-standing practice in American sports, such as those given to NFL Super Bowl victors.
Donald Trump is confirmed to attend the final and is expected to present the trophy. This will be his first attendance at any of the 102 World Cup games played so far, having missed all of the USA‘s matches, including their elimination by Belgium in the last 16. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously indicated Trump’s attendance, a detail later confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Championship Rings Details
A total of 30 rings will be allocated to the world champions. Additionally, 1,996 rings will be made available for purchase by fans, forming part of a total production of 2,026 individually numbered rings. Each ring will incorporate a miniature World Cup trophy into its design and will feature an engraving on the band.
The design for each ring will include the FIFA World Cup trophy on one side, with the other side customised to reflect the identity of the champion team. Every ring will be individually numbered, custom-fitted, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Immediately following the final, the winning team’s captain and head coach are set to receive temporary championship rings during the celebrations. The final versions of the 30 winners’ rings will later be custom-made and officially presented to ensure a personalised fit.
This initiative aims to provide a lasting memento of the team’s triumph. The customised rings will be awarded to the tournament champions after the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Trump’s Attendance and Controversy
The relationship between Infantino and Trump has been a focal point of controversy during this summer’s World Cup. The US president reportedly contacted the FIFA chief to request a review of United States striker Folarin Balogun‘s red card. The subsequent decision to suspend Balogun‘s automatic ban drew significant criticism, leading to questions regarding the integrity of the tournament.
Balogun was permitted to participate in the knockout stage match against Belgium, where the USA experienced a 4-1 defeat. No other red or yellow cards have been suspended throughout this World Cup, despite appeals from nations such as France and England for their own incidents to be reviewed.
Trump has a history of attending major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the US Open tennis tournament, the NBA finals, and the Ryder Cup. He also hosted the UFC at the White House during his two presidential terms. It is not uncommon for heads of state in host countries to attend World Cup finals.
The USA has co-hosted the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, with the final two matches taking place in America. There is a weather warning in New York concerning air quality due to wildfires in Canada, but there is no indication that the final at MetLife Stadium will be affected. The third-place match between England and France is scheduled for Saturday at 22:00 BST in Miami, while the final between Argentina and Spain is set for Sunday at 20:00.
