Spain secures top spot in Group H

Spain has advanced to the World Cup knockout stage after a 1-0 victory over Uruguay, securing the top position in Group H. The decisive goal came from Alex Baena in the first half, which ultimately led to the elimination of Marcelo Bielsa‘s Uruguayan side from the tournament. Cape Verde also progressed from Group H, claiming the second knockout berth.

Spain concluded the group stage with seven points, accumulated from two wins and a draw. Uruguay exited the competition with just two points, placing them level with Saudi Arabia at the bottom of the group. Prior to the match, Spain held the lead in Group H with four points, two points ahead of both Uruguay and Cape Verde.

Defender Aymeric Laporte had expressed confidence in Spain‘s preparation, stating that the team’s focus remained on themselves despite the varied opponents they had faced during their 33-match unbeaten run. Uruguay‘s coach, Marcelo Bielsa, had approached the match as a crucial final, aiming for a win to guarantee a spot in the round of 32.

Baena’s decisive goal and match highlights

The breakthrough occurred in the 42nd minute when Alex Baena found space at the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot. Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was unable to hold onto the ball, which slipped from his grasp and trickled into the net. This costly error led to Muslera being replaced at halftime.

The goal came amidst a moment where both Manuel Ugarte and Lamine Yamal were down with injuries, but Baena maintained his focus, allowing Spain to capitalise on the opportunity. Baena later described it as one of the goals that had brought him the most happiness, acknowledging the toughness of the match. He noted that Uruguay was fighting for their tournament life, while Spain was competing for the top spot, and despite not showing their best form, they competed effectively.

Uruguay started the match aggressively, aiming to restrict Lamine‘s space on the right flank, with Guillermo Varela and the defence maintaining tight coverage on the 18-year-old player. Early in the first half, Spain‘s primary threats came from set pieces. Pau Cubarsi headed wide from a Baena corner in the 16th minute and missed another close-range opportunity four minutes later, also from a Baena delivery.

Uruguay‘s best chance in the first half came after Federico Valverde forced an error from Rodri in the 27th minute, subsequently finding Darwin Nunez inside the area. However, Nunez opted for a backheel attempt instead of shooting, and the chance was lost.

Second half action and Uruguay’s exit

The second half mirrored the first in its pattern, with Uruguay pushing forward but lacking precision in their attacking third. Federico Vinas, who replaced Valverde, nearly made an impact, but his left-footed shot from a Maxi Araujo cross went high and wide. Spain introduced Dani Olmo, who missed an opportunity from the middle of the box following a cross from Lamine in the 63rd minute, but Luis de la Fuente‘s side appeared to be in control of the game.

As the match neared its end, Uruguay intensified their pressure. However, Unai Simon denied Mathias Olivera and then saved Nicolas de la Cruz‘s right-footed shot from outside the box. Ferran Torres nearly extended Spain‘s lead, hitting the crossbar with a right-footed effort from just inside the area after receiving a pass from Fabian Ruiz.

The frustration for Uruguay culminated in stoppage time when Agustin Canobbio received a red card for a reckless challenge on Cubarsi, marking a difficult end to their campaign. This incident capped off a disappointing tournament for Uruguay, who were ultimately knocked out of the World Cup.
