Ecuador has secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2006, following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Germany. The win, achieved on Thursday, June 25, sparked widespread celebrations, including a national holiday declared by President Daniel Noboa.
The South American nation’s coach, Sebastian Beccacece, was at the centre of emotional scenes after the final whistle. He sprinted into the stands at the New York/New Jersey stadium to embrace his wife and celebrate with fans, many of whom were visibly moved by the historic achievement. Beccacece’s celebration quickly gained significant attention.
Dramatic Comeback Secures Qualification
Ecuador entered their final Group E match against Germany needing a victory to keep their World Cup campaign alive. This came after a defeat to Ivory Coast and a draw against tournament debutants Curacao in their initial two matches. The match against Germany began with a setback, as Germany took an early lead in the second minute through Leroy Sane.
Ecuador appealed the goal, believing there was a high boot on Pedro Vite during the build-up, but their appeals were rejected, and the goal stood. Despite this early disadvantage, Ecuador maintained their composure. Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute, marking Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament, remarkably coming from their 40th shot of the campaign.
The game remained finely balanced throughout the second half. Germany had a penalty overturned after a VAR intervention, and Germany’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, made a crucial save against Enner Valencia to keep the score level. The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when substitute Kevin Rodriguez flicked on a corner, allowing Gonzalo Plata to score from close range.
Following Plata’s goal, Ecuador endured nearly 20 minutes of intense pressure from Germany but held firm to secure the win. This victory allowed them to qualify for the knockout stages as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the tournament.
Coach’s Perspective and National Celebration
Speaking after the match, Coach Beccacece expressed that the result was the culmination of the team’s objectives. He encouraged celebration, stating, “Now it is time to celebrate. Time to share this feeling with your family, your friends, to drink your beer.” He further emphasised the significance of the win, calling it “the biggest victory for Ecuador in a World Cup.”
Beccacece highlighted the team’s resilience and consistent approach despite facing criticism and a difficult start to the tournament. He noted that the team maintained their tranquillity and their playing philosophy. The coach also shared his perspective on the nature of football, stating, “Football is like that: one day you win, the other day you lose. We were not in the hell before, neither I think we are in the heaven now. The important thing is the balance.”
He added that the team did not consider themselves superior to Curacao nor inferior to Germany, stressing their intention to continue with humility and prudence. Germany, despite the defeat, still progressed as the Group E winners, while Ecuador moved into the Round of 32 with considerable momentum.
President Daniel Noboa’s declaration of a national holiday on Friday, following the team’s success, underscored the widespread joy and pride across the country. President Noboa acknowledged the team’s perseverance, stating, “Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough moments they went through, managed to recover and give this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, a holiday!” This marks only the second time in history that Ecuador has reached the World Cup knockout stages, with their previous advancement to the round of 16 occurring in the 2006 tournament.

The victory sparked widespread celebrations among fans, including those present at the New York/New Jersey stadium, who witnessed the historic achievement firsthand. Ivory Coast finished second in Group E after their 2-0 win over Curacao.
Ecuador’s journey to the knockout phase represents a significant moment for the nation’s football, overcoming initial challenges to secure a memorable qualification on Thursday, June 25.
