Spain advances, Uruguay eliminated

Uruguay has been eliminated from the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain in Guadalajara. The result allowed Spain to secure the top spot in Group H, while Uruguay failed to progress beyond the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup. This outcome means Spain will avoid a match against Argentina in the next round.

The decisive goal came just before half-time when Álex Baena’s shot found the net following a mistake by Uruguay’s goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera. Despite efforts, Uruguay managed only two shots on target throughout the match, neither posing a significant threat until late in the game.

Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay’s coach, took responsibility for the team’s performance, stating, “It’s my responsibility; we had a potential that I didn’t manage to turn into a team that played to its level.” Muslera was replaced at half-time, and Federico Valverde was substituted on the hour mark, a decision that appeared to be against his will.

Match details and team reactions

The match saw Spain’s only shot on target result in the goal, while Uruguay struggled to create clear opportunities. The goal, scored in the 42nd minute, was described as a calamitous error. The move leading to the goal began with Manuel Ugarte going down, and despite calls for Spain to stop, play continued, leading to a cross from Marcos Llorente for Baena’s shot.

Muslera did not return for the second half, with Sergio Rochet taking his place. Ugarte was also carried off injured. Uruguay’s frustrations culminated in Agustín Canobbio receiving a straight red card in stoppage time.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, commented on the physical nature of the game, noting, “Maybe they used excessive [force] but that is what the referees are there for. You have to know how to play these kids of games too; the players understood the circumstances.”

Injury concerns for Spain

Spain also faced injury concerns during the match. Nico Williams left the field limping with a muscle problem, and Yéremy Pino departed with his arm in a sling due to a shoulder injury, which could potentially end his tournament. Lamine Yamal was replaced 15 minutes from time as his playing minutes are being managed following a hamstring injury that concluded his club season early.

Despite the win, Spain’s attacking performance was described as labored, leaving De la Fuente with considerations before the knockout stages. Spain will now face either Austria or Algeria in Los Angeles. The team remains unbeaten in 34 competitive games and has not conceded a goal in the World Cup.

Uruguay’s early exit allowed debutants Cape Verde to secure second place in the group after a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, setting up a meeting with Lionel Messi and the defending champions.

The match was attended by Spain’s King Felipe, but the encounter between the two former World Cup winners was largely considered a disappointment in terms of quality of play. Ferran Torres, Yamal’s replacement, hit the bar five minutes from time, missing an opportunity to double Spain’s lead.
