The FIFA World Cup match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle on Friday saw a mix of jubilation, disappointment, and protests. The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, has kept Iran in contention for a spot in the next round as one of the best third-place finishers, pending results from Saturday’s matches. For Egypt, the draw marked their first progression past the group stages in the World Cup‘s history.

Following the match, Egyptian fans celebrated wildly outside the stadium. Daniel Salib, an Egyptian supporter, expressed immense pride in his country and team, citing their performance against New Zealand and Belgium as justification for their advancement. Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was described as electric, with no empty seats and continuous chanting from both sets of fans. Spectators were observed taking pictures together at halftime, and after the final whistle, Egyptian players were seen consoling their Iranian counterparts.

Match Highlights and Fan Reactions

The game itself was action-packed, with both teams having significant moments. Iran experienced a missed penalty in the first half and later had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside, following a late offensive push. Despite the draw, Iranian supporter Saeed Nassef conveyed disappointment but remained hopeful for Iran‘s progression to the round of 32, which depends on Sunday night’s game outcomes. He praised the Iranian team’s performance despite facing challenges.

The match also featured various displays of national pride and political statements. Egyptian fans showcased their heritage with pharaohs’ headdresses and outfits, while Karim Elshabini, wearing a pharaoh’s headpiece, shared his pride in the national team and the positive atmosphere among fans. Palestinian flags were prominently displayed by some attendees, with Egypt fan Bilal Ali stating his inability to remain silent on political issues given ongoing events. Several Egyptian and Iranian fans were heard shouting “Free Palestine” as they passed Ali.

Protests and Pride Celebrations

Outside the stadium, protests against the Iranian government took place, with demonstrators waving US and Israeli flags and displaying images of Iranian opposition figure Reza Pahlavi. Saeed Nassef, carrying the official Iranian flag, reported facing harassment from these activists, who he said hurled insults and expletive-laden Islamophobic chants. A confrontation between anti-government activists and a fan carrying an Iranian flag, identified as Milad, was diffused by police intervention. Milad emphasised his support for the players and the joy they bring to the people, regardless of political issues.

The Seattle match was designated as the World Cup‘s “Pride Match,” coinciding with Pride Week in the city. This designation led to some tensions, as officials from both Iran and Egypt reportedly raised objections to the Pride celebrations around their fixture. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and often penalised in Egypt. Coaches from both teams declined to comment on the event in their pre-match press conferences. Despite this, a few rainbow flags and paraphernalia were visible within the stadium, though there were no reported issues inside.

In Seattle‘s Ballard district, a drag queen hosted a show ahead of the match, celebrating diversity during Pride Week. Louise Chernin, 80, a committee member organising the event, highlighted Seattle‘s inclusive nature and its tradition of sports teams holding “Pride nights.” Steven Andersen, a Norwegian immigrant’s grandson, attended the celebrations, expressing his belief in the right to love freely and the importance of progressive American ideals. The event also saw an Iranian fan, Hameed, wearing a shirt with “Minab 168” to honour victims of a school bombing in southern Iran. He called for a credible investigation into the incident and stressed the importance of protecting humanity.
