Heinrich Malan has announced his departure from the role of head coach for the Ireland Men’s cricket team, a position he held for over four years. His decision was communicated to his staff and players following the conclusion of a successful T20 series against India.

Malan, who was appointed head coach in 2022, has overseen a period marked by significant achievements for Ireland Men. These include securing three consecutive qualifications for the T20 World Cup, as well as guiding the team to its first three victories in Test match cricket. Under his leadership, there has also been a continued focus on developing a broader pool of international-standard players.

Despite his current contract extending into early 2027, Malan believes that the timing is appropriate for him to step back. He indicated that his departure now would allow a new head coach the opportunity to prepare the squad for upcoming challenges. Specifically, the ODI series against Afghanistan in August is highlighted as an important part of preparations for the 50-over World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for early 2027.

Malan’s tenure and achievements

During his time as head coach, Malan’s tenure saw several notable successes for Ireland. The team achieved a historic T20 World Cup victory against England in Melbourne. They also secured their first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, followed by their first home Test win against Zimbabwe in Belfast.

More recently, Ireland celebrated a historic T20 series win at home against India, completing a 2-0 series sweep. This included a narrow one-run victory in the second match in Belfast. Beyond these specific milestones, the team also recorded wins against other prominent cricketing nations such as Pakistan, West Indies, and South Africa. These performances contributed to direct qualifications for T20 World Cups, demonstrating the team’s ability to compete with top international sides.

Malan expressed his appreciation for his time with the team, stating it had been a privilege to work with the players, staff, and the wider Irish cricket community. He reflected positively on his family’s experience living in the country and their involvement in Irish cricket.
