India’s Preparation Questioned After Ireland Series
Former India cricketer Ambati Rayudu has stated that the team’s 0-2 T20I series defeat to Ireland was not surprising, attributing the outcome to inadequate preparation for the challenging conditions. Rayudu believes that Shreyas Iyer and his squad were under-prepared for the assignment, particularly after transitioning from the flat tracks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the more difficult pitches encountered in Ireland.
Rayudu, who represented India in 55 ODIs and six T20Is, explained that moving from fast-paced, batting-friendly IPL surfaces to spongy wickets with lateral movement proved to be a significant hurdle for the reigning T20 world champions. He noted that many players are accustomed to rapid bat-swings, and their control of the down-swing and in-between game became a concern on the slower, seaming conditions in Ireland.
The former batter specifically pointed out that the team’s inability to adapt quickly to these varied conditions contributed to their struggles. India lost the second T20I by a narrow margin of one run in Belfast, completing a series whitewash. Rayudu emphasized that the technical adjustments required for such a drastic change in playing surfaces were not adequately addressed, leading to the team’s performance issues.
Tilak Varma’s Batting Under Scrutiny
During his analysis, Rayudu also highlighted specific areas for improvement within the Indian squad, particularly focusing on Tilak Varma. Despite Varma’s valiant knock of 55 runs in the second T20I, which came off 46 deliveries, Rayudu suggested that the innings lacked the necessary momentum for the team.
Rayudu identified Varma’s game against slow bowling on slow surfaces as a long-standing challenge. He explained that Varma struggles to increase the tempo when the ball does not come onto the bat effectively. The left-hander’s tendency to access square boundaries more frequently against spinners, without adequately using his feet, limits his scoring options on such pitches.
According to Rayudu, Varma does not sweep on the pitch of the ball and employs unconventional shots, which further complicates his ability to accelerate the scoring rate. Rayudu believes that improving this aspect of his game, rather than focusing solely on his mental approach, would naturally lead to an increased tempo. He also acknowledged that Indian players often lack sufficient time between series to work on their batting techniques, which can hinder their adaptation to different conditions.
Patience Advocated for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The conversation also touched upon the inclusion of young talent, with Rayudu addressing the calls for 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his debut. Sooryavanshi, who impressed in the IPL with a strike rate exceeding 230, was not featured in either of the matches against Ireland.
Rayudu advised against rushing Sooryavanshi into the national side, advocating for patience and continued development. He stressed the importance of giving seasoned openers, who have a proven track record and have contributed to a World Cup victory, ample opportunities. Rayudu noted that Sooryavanshi is currently gaining valuable experience by being part of the Indian team dressing room, learning about team dynamics and his potential role.
This exposure, according to Rayudu, will be beneficial for the youngster’s long-term development. While Sooryavanshi is expected to debut at some point during the ongoing tour of the UK, which includes upcoming T20Is in England, Rayudu reiterated that he would not rush the debut simply because the team lost a couple of games.
Looking Ahead to the England Series
Despite the disappointing results in Ireland, Rayudu expressed optimism about the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. He believes that the wickets in England will be significantly better than those encountered in Ireland, which should suit India’s batting style more effectively.
Rayudu stated that he would not read too much into the loss against Ireland, as the conditions in England are expected to be far more conducive for batting. The India Tour of England 2026 schedule indicates that the first T20I between England and India is set to commence on July 1, 2026, at 10:00 PM IST.
The matches will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Ten 1 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 3 SD & HD (Hindi), Sony Sports Ten 4 (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada), and Sony Sports Ten 5 SD & HD, as well as Sony MAX.
