Post-Match Confrontation Under Scrutiny
Following the World Cup final, a confrontation involving players from Argentina and Spain has drawn attention, particularly concerning Leandro Paredes. Despite his involvement, Spain midfielder Gavi has expressed his view that Paredes should not face a suspension. The incident occurred on the pitch after Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
The fracas involved several Argentina players, including Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala. During the altercation, Paredes appeared to push Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. Gavi, who was an unused substitute in the match, attempted to intervene but was forced to the ground by Almada. Paredes also pushed the Barcelona midfielder to the turf by placing his hand in Gavi’s face.
FIFA has initiated an investigation into the events, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the situation. This could potentially lead to suspensions for any players or coaches involved, and the Argentine Football Association might also face a fine. However, Gavi stated, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He acknowledged that while the image might not be ideal for younger audiences, it represents a more physical and aggressive aspect of football. Gavi suggested that a more logical outcome would have been a send-off during the match itself, rather than a retrospective suspension.
Initially, FIFA’s commentator information system incorrectly reported that Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for his actions against Garcia. This red card was subsequently removed from the system, and FIFA has confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken at the time of the match. It was noted that Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was dismissed during the final, receiving a second yellow card in second-half added time.
Ayala’s Apology and FIFA’s Review
Fabián Ayala, Argentina’s assistant coach, was another key figure in the post-match incident. He addressed the event from Buenos Aires, specifically regarding a shove he delivered to Dani Olmo on the pitch. Ayala, who had a notable career as a centre-back, admitted his actions were a mistake and expressed a desire to meet Olmo in person to offer an apology.
Ayala described the aftermath of such a significant match, noting that it takes days to process. He mentioned the warm reception the team received upon their return, which helped to calm emotions. Despite this, he continued to replay and analyse the match. Reflecting on the incident, Ayala stated, “It’s a shame and you have to own up to what you did on the pitch.” He explained that his intention was to break up the scuffle, but acknowledged that adrenaline played a role. “It was more of a shove than anything else, it wasn’t a punch. It was a reaction to something they said, but if I see Olmo I’ll apologize to him in person,” Ayala clarified, taking responsibility for his actions.
FIFA has since reversed its decision regarding Paredes’ red card, meaning he will not face an automatic ban. This development came a day after the extensive confrontation at MetLife Stadium. The initial dismissal by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic was later omitted from the referee’s official report to FIFA, thus preventing an automatic suspension. As a result, Paredes currently faces no disciplinary punishment for this specific incident.
However, the case is not entirely closed. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee is still actively investigating the incidents involving several Argentina personnel following their defeat to Spain. The review includes actions by Nahuel Molina, who reportedly punched Rodri in the chest, Thiago Almada, who also struck Gavi, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who hit Dani Olmo. FIFA is in the process of gathering all relevant reports and footage, indicating that further action could still be taken once the disciplinary process is complete. The governing body is also assessing other episodes from the tournament, including a banner supporting Argentina’s claims regarding the Falkland Islands after their semi-final match against England, which could lead to separate measures.
