Mandeep, Abhishek and Lakra emphasise teamwork ahead of FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

As the Indian men’s hockey team prepares for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, forwards Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, and Shilanand Lakra have underscored the importance of teamwork, consistency, chemistry, and mental readiness. The tournament, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, is scheduled from August 15 to August 30. India’s campaign will commence on August 15 against Wales in Pool D, with subsequent matches against England and Pakistan.

Mandeep Singh, a seasoned striker set to participate in his fourth World Cup, discussed his current role in mentoring younger players. He shared that he learned significantly from senior players earlier in his career and now aims to pass on that knowledge. Mandeep focuses on guiding younger forwards on managing pressure, maintaining composure, and making crucial decisions during significant matches.

Regarding team preparation, Mandeep highlighted the specific training sessions for forwards. These sessions involve extensive work within the final nine yards, concentrating on building connections and ensuring that each attack yields a positive outcome. The team has also dedicated time to refining their ability to receive the final pass and convert scoring opportunities.

Mandeep emphasised that a proficient striker’s role extends beyond merely scoring goals, stressing that hockey is a team sport. He noted that a stronger understanding and connection with teammates enhance overall effectiveness. The objective upon entering the circle is to create an outcome, whether it is a goal, a shot on target, or earning a penalty corner.

Developing Forward Play

Shilanand Lakra, who is preparing for his first FIH World Cup appearance, acknowledged the support from senior players, particularly Mandeep, in helping him adapt to the demands of international hockey. Lakra mentioned that senior players provide constructive feedback on areas for improvement, and Mandeep’s motivation and guidance are particularly helpful for his continuous learning and development.

Lakra also pointed out that the role of a modern forward encompasses more than just scoring. He focuses on contributing to the team in various ways, including creating opportunities, scoring, and making tackles. He views forwards as the first line of defence, stating that strong defensive play from them simplifies tasks for defenders and midfielders.

Abhishek, recognised for his consistent goal-scoring in recent years, stated that sustained success begins with diligent work without the ball. He highlighted the critical importance of off-the-ball movement and pressing, as the striker acts as the initial defensive line. After winning possession, the subsequent steps involve establishing connections with other forwards and then concluding the move, whether by scoring, taking a shot on target, or securing a penalty corner.

Mental Preparation and Consistency

Abhishek also stressed the significance of mental preparation in high-pressure situations. He explained that composure within the circle is a result of consistent training. Without dedicated practice, making correct decisions in critical moments becomes challenging. The team also incorporates meditation and draws on experience to enhance their mental fortitude. He believes that increased match experience contributes to greater calmness when opportunities arise.

Meanwhile, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team departed for Europe to begin its journey for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026. The team travelled from Bengaluru to Mumbai before heading to Frankfurt, Germany, for final preparations. They are scheduled to play two practice matches against Germany on July 31 and August 1 to fine-tune their strategies and adapt to European playing conditions.

Following the training camp, the women’s team will proceed to Amsterdam on August 2 to continue their World Cup preparations in the Netherlands. Their campaign will commence on August 16 against China, followed by matches against South Africa and England in Pool D.

Salima Tete, the captain of the women’s team, expressed confidence in the team’s preparations before their departure. She noted that the squad is eager for the challenge and aims to carry their training momentum into the practice matches and the World Cup. Tete highlighted the opening game against China as an important test and expressed the team’s determination to start the tournament positively and perform to their best.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are focusing on comprehensive preparation, with the men’s team emphasising collective effort and the women’s team undertaking practice matches in Europe ahead of their respective campaigns.
