Spain’s Confidence Ahead of Semifinal
Spain is expressing strong confidence as they prepare to face France in the World Cup semifinal in Dallas. Head coach Luis de la Fuente stated that he has “very high expectations” for the upcoming match against Didier Deschamps’ side. This sentiment follows Spain’s 2-1 victory over Belgium in the quarter-finals.
De la Fuente emphasised that both Spain and France are considered strong contenders for the final, acknowledging France’s exceptional potential while highlighting his own team’s capabilities. He noted that Spain has previously defeated France in a semi-final, suggesting a historical advantage.
Yamal’s Bold Statement
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal echoed his coach’s confidence, asserting that France should be wary of Spain. Following his ‘Player of the Match’ performance against Belgium, Yamal stated that Spain has nothing to fear in the semifinal. He believes the match is a highly anticipated clash between the tournament’s two strongest teams.
Yamal’s remarks referenced Spain’s 2-1 victory over France in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final, where he played a significant role. He believes this recent history provides his team with ample reason to approach the upcoming encounter with confidence. Despite having one goal in the current tournament, Yamal has been a key creative force for Spain, leading the World Cup in chances created.
The Barcelona winger also indicated that Spain intends to maintain their playing style against France. He expects France to attack but believes Spain will stick to their established approach. Yamal’s comments suggest a belief that Spain has been the superior team in recent encounters.
Team Depth and Performance
De la Fuente highlighted the depth and quality within his squad, pointing to the contributions of players like Fabian Ruiz and Mikel Merino. Ruiz scored his first World Cup goal in the quarter-final, while Merino netted a late winner against Belgium, similar to his goal against Portugal.
