Ireland v Afghanistan: Captain Paul Stirling returns for five-game ODI series
Ireland v Afghanistan: Captain Paul Stirling returns for five-game ODI series

Stirling Returns to Lead Squad

Paul Stirling is set to captain Ireland in the upcoming five-game One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan. His return follows an injury sustained at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. This series marks Stirling’s comeback as skipper after a calf issue, despite his decision to step down from the T20 captaincy earlier this year.

The series will also be the first under the guidance of new head coach Gary Wilson, who took over from Heinrich Malan after Ireland’s 2-0 T20 series victory over India in June. Wilson expressed his anticipation for the series, highlighting the strong rivalry between Ireland and Afghanistan.

Wilson noted that these matches are Ireland’s first ODIs in 15 months, and many players have demonstrated their readiness for selection during this period. He emphasised the team’s approach, stating that the squad selected reflects their desired playing style, focusing on dynamic play and seeking opportunities to pressure opponents.

New Faces and Injury Concerns

The squad sees the inclusion of several new players, with Jai Moondra receiving his first ODI call-up. Moondra previously impressed during the T20 series against India. Also making their first appearances in the 50-over format are Ben Calitz and Byron McDonough. McDonough, a 24-year-old pace bowler, earned his call-up after strong performances in the recent Inter-Provincial 50-over Cup, where he helped Leinster Lightning secure the title.

National Selector Andrew White shared his enthusiasm for the squad, particularly the new additions. He mentioned that Moondra and McDonough bring distinct qualities that are expected to make a significant impact. White also highlighted Gavin Hoey’s ability to take wickets through spin and Ben Calitz’s powerful batting, which offers valuable options in the middle to lower order.

However, Ireland continues to face challenges with injuries. A number of key players will miss the series, including Josh Little, Matt Hollard, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neil, and David Delany. Matt Hollard, who had a notable T20 series against India, is among those sidelined. The absence of these players will test the depth of Ireland’s bowling attack. On a positive note, bowler Mark Adair and all-rounder Curtis Campher return to the squad after recovering from injuries that kept them out of the matches against India.

Series Schedule and Preparation

The five-match series is scheduled to begin on 5 August 2026. The first two ODIs will be held at Bready on 5 August and 7 August, both starting at 10:45 am. The action then moves to Stormont for the remaining three games, which will take place on 10 August, 12 August, and 15 August, also commencing at 10:45 am.

This series marks Ireland’s first ODIs since a drawn series against the West Indies in May 2025. It will serve as crucial preparation for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, which are slated to begin early next year. Wilson emphasised the team’s commitment to consistently seeking wickets with the ball and demonstrating a “never say die attitude” in the field, a trait he believes is characteristic of strong Irish sides.

The full Ireland squad for the series includes: Paul Stirling (captain), Mark Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, George Dockrell, Gavin Hoey, Andrew McBrine, Liam McCarthy, Byron McDonough, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, and Lorcan Tucker.
