Club teammates face off in World Cup quarter-final
The upcoming World Cup quarter-final in Miami will see England face Norway, bringing together club teammates Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard in a decisive match. Both players, central to Arsenal’s recent achievements, will put their club camaraderie aside as they represent their respective nations on the global stage. This encounter marks a significant moment for both players, who have shared the pitch 117 times for their club.
The match is anticipated to be a key fixture in determining which nation advances to the semi-finals. Rice and Ødegaard, born within a month of each other, have primarily competed against each other during intense training sessions at London Colney, rather than at age-group levels.
Both players are considered leaders for their national teams. Ødegaard, who became Norway’s captain in 2021 at the age of 22 under coach Ståle Solbakken, later took on the same role at Arsenal. Rice, who serves as vice-captain for England and is part of Arsenal’s leadership group, has become a significant figure for both his club and country.
Rice has been noted for his commitment, playing through hamstring and lower-back pain during a recent match in Mexico City. Ødegaard praised Rice, stating he “always gives absolutely everything for the team, always fighting for every single ball, bringing his energy to the pitch.” He further described Rice as a “very complete player” capable of defending, attacking, and being physical.
Ødegaard’s importance to Arsenal’s plans has been subject to scrutiny due to a series of injuries that affected his title-winning season, as well as the arrival of Eberechi Eze. Despite this, Arsenal reportedly has no plans to sell him. His role with Norway, however, remains central, with Solbakken highlighting his long-standing performance as one of their best players alongside Erling Haaland.
Ødegaard’s performance in the tournament has improved since the opening match against Iraq, particularly during Norway’s victory over Brazil in the last 16. Solbakken noted that Ødegaard might have a more flexible role within the Norwegian team compared to his responsibilities at Arsenal, attributing this to his experience and the greater burden placed on him within the national squad.

Key players and team dynamics
The quarter-final match will also feature other Arsenal players. For England, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke are part of the squad. In another quarter-final match, Mikel Merino’s Spain will play against Leandro Trossard’s Belgium in Los Angeles, while William Saliba’s France will compete against Morocco in Boston.
Merino, who scored a late winner for Spain against Portugal, expressed his happiness at being part of the national team, describing it as one of the happiest moments of his career. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente spoke highly of Merino, calling him “world-class” and a “safe bet” for the team.
The respect between Rice and Ødegaard is evident, with Ødegaard remarking that it is “such a pleasure to share the pitch with him.” However, this mutual admiration will be set aside for the duration of the match. Rice may be tasked with neutralising Ødegaard’s influence on the field, a strategy that could manage his workload given his recent physical demands.
