McCullum reflects on England Test coaching tenure and future white-ball focus

Brendon McCullum has reflected on his time as England’s Test head coach, a role he departed on Sunday, 12 July. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced his decision to step down after a four-year tenure. Despite his departure from the Test setup, McCullum will continue in his capacity as England’s white-ball head coach, with his sights set on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

During his time leading the Test side, McCullum oversaw 27 wins, 20 defeats, and two draws. However, a series of challenging results, including a 2-1 series loss to New Zealand and a 4-1 Ashes defeat, marked the conclusion of his coaching period for the Test team. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the relationships formed, calling the last four years a significant highlight of his career.

Reflections on Test Performance and Departure

McCullum acknowledged that the inability to secure victories in major Test series against Australia and India was a key factor in his decision to step away. He noted that the team did not achieve the desired outcomes in these marquee series, despite some positive moments over the four years. England managed 2-2 home series draws against both Australia (2023) and India (2025), but faced substantial 4-1 defeats when playing away from home against these opponents.

The former New Zealand international admitted that he could only say “sorry” to England fans for not winning these crucial series, taking full responsibility for the team’s cultural approach, tactical decisions, and overall results. He stated that in a results-driven business, if outcomes are not satisfactory, it is time for someone else to take the helm. McCullum confirmed that the decision for him to step down came from the board, stating he received a “tap on the shoulder” and fully respected the decision.

The conclusion of McCullum’s Test coaching era coincided with Ben Stokes’ retirement from the format. McCullum described a sense of fitting symmetry in their simultaneous departures, noting that Stokes had sent him supportive messages. The partnership of McCullum and captain Ben Stokes was known for transforming England’s approach to Test cricket with an aggressive style, often referred to as ‘Bazball’. This approach initially led to a strong start, with England winning 10 of McCullum’s first 11 Tests.

However, the team’s performance saw a decline in the later stages of his tenure, with England losing seven of their last nine Tests. This period included the 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand, which also marked Stokes’ Test retirement.

Focus on White-Ball Cricket

With his Test coaching responsibilities concluded, Brendon McCullum has now shifted his complete focus to his role as England’s white-ball coach. He expressed excitement about the white-ball side, particularly noting that the T20 team is currently in a strong position. England recently secured a 4-0 victory in a T20I series against India, which propelled them to the top of the Men’s T20I rankings.

While acknowledging that the One-Day International side requires further development, McCullum remains confident in the team’s ability to improve. He is looking ahead to rebuilding England into a strong contender for the 2027 World Cup. England’s recent performance in 50-over ICC events has been challenging; after their 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, they finished seventh in 2023 with three wins while defending their title, and experienced a winless campaign at the 2025 Champions Trophy, which occurred during McCullum’s tenure.

McCullum’s immediate focus is on the upcoming ODI series against India, aiming to carry forward the momentum from the recent T20I success. He believes there is a realistic chance for the team to lift the trophy at the next World Cup, a goal he holds for both the players and the supporting fans.
