Kylian Mbappe has continued to set new benchmarks at the World Cup 2026, achieving several significant records for France. His recent performances have seen him surpass previous national team legends and establish new tournament milestones.

In France’s 2-0 quarter-final victory against Morocco in Boston, Mbappe scored a goal, bringing his total non-penalty goals at the tournament level with Lionel Messi. This strike also increased his overall World Cup goal tally to 20, placing him just one goal behind Messi on the all-time list.

French National Team Records

Mbappe became France’s all-time top goal scorer in just one World Cup appearance. He surpassed Olivier Giroud after scoring against Senegal in France’s tournament opener. The Real Madrid forward now has 64 goals for the French national side, while Giroud holds 57. Thierry Henry is third with 51 goals, and Antoine Griezmann is fourth with 44 goals.

Additionally, Mbappe is now France’s leading goal scorer at the World Cup. His goal against Senegal marked his 14th World Cup goal, exceeding Just Fontaine’s record of 13 goals, all of which were scored in the 1958 World Cup. He has since added six more goals, further extending his lead in this category.

Mbappe also shares the record for the most appearances for France in World Cup finals, joining Hugo Lloris with 20 appearances. He is the youngest player to reach this milestone and is expected to break this record in the upcoming semi-finals.

World Cup Tournament Records

Beyond national team records, Mbappe has also made his mark on World Cup history. His goal against Morocco brought him level with Messi for the most non-penalty goals in World Cup history, with both players having 17 across their appearances.

Another significant achievement came with his first goal against Sweden, which made him the leading goal scorer in World Cup knockout matches. This moved him past Brazilian football greats Leonidas and Ronaldo. He scored again against Sweden, followed by goals against Paraguay and Morocco, accumulating 12 World Cup knockout goals.

Mbappe also set a new record for goal contributions. His assist for Ousmane Dembele’s goal against Morocco made him the first player to register 11 direct goal contributions in two different World Cups. He achieved double figures in the Qatar World Cup 2022 with eight goals and two assists, and has now improved upon these figures in the current tournament. He is the first player since 1966 to achieve 10 or more goal contributions in two separate tournaments.

Golden Boot Race

Mbappe is currently leading the Golden Boot standings, despite being level on goals with Messi. Both players have eight goals in the tournament. However, FIFA’s tie-breaking rules, which prioritize assists, place Mbappe ahead. He has registered eight goals and three assists, totaling 11 direct goal contributions. Messi, also with eight goals, has provided one assist, bringing his total goal contributions to nine.

The Golden Boot race remains competitive, with other players like Erling Haaland of Norway and Harry Kane of England still in contention. Mbappe’s superior assist tally gives him the advantage if the tournament were to conclude with both players tied on goals. The French captain’s 11 goal contributions are the highest by a player in a single World Cup since Gerd Muller recorded 13 in 1970.

Mbappe’s latest goal also marked his 14th career World Cup knockout-stage goal contribution, drawing him level with Messi for the most by any player in the modern era over the past six decades. The competition between Mbappe and Messi continues to be a defining narrative of the tournament as they both pursue a second World Cup title.

Mbappe’s strike against Morocco was his 20th career World Cup goal in 20 tournament appearances, leaving him one goal behind Messi, who leads the all-time men’s World Cup scoring chart with 21 goals in 31 appearances across six editions.

The French team has progressed through the knockout stages without conceding a goal or going into extra time. Mbappe’s performance against Morocco, despite missing an early penalty, saw him score in the 60th minute, securing France’s lead. He then celebrated at full-time, indicating a minor ankle issue was precautionary.

The Golden Boot race remains finely balanced on goals, but Mbappe’s three assists currently give him the edge as the tournament heads into its decisive final rounds.
