The Jaffna Kings, a franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026, have had their franchise rights terminated by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and tournament organiser Innovative Production Group (IPG). This decision was announced following alleged financial and contractual breaches by the ownership group, Sports Commune. Despite the termination, the team will continue to participate in the tournament under the same name, squad, and coaching staff.
The termination means that all franchise rights have reverted to IPG. Both IPG and SLC have assumed full operational control of the team, which has won the tournament four times, to ensure the competition continues without interruption. The decision was made in the middle of the tournament.
Ownership Controversies and Allegations
The termination of the franchise rights stems from several controversies surrounding the ownership group. One co-owner, Manjot Kalra, was arrested on corruption-related allegations. Another owner, Mayank Goel, has reportedly become unreachable.
Allegations against the ownership group include failing to meet financial obligations outlined in the franchise agreement. There were also claims of unpaid player and staff salaries, as well as mismanagement of sponsor funds, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the franchise agreement.
Manjot Kalra, who was a key player in India‘s 2018 U-19 World Cup triumph, was detained by the Police Special Investigations Unit. His arrest followed local reports indicating a complaint filed by Jaffna Kings players Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, and Dunith Wellalage, which initiated an investigation. It was alleged that Kalra attempted to offer money to an LPL player.
Following Kalra’s arrest, SLC stated its commitment to cooperating fully with the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports. SLC also affirmed that the ongoing investigation would not impact the tournament.
Ensuring Tournament Integrity
Anil Mohan, CEO of IPG, emphasised that maintaining the integrity of the tournament is the organisers’ primary concern. He noted that while the decision was challenging, it was necessary to protect the LPL and provide stability for players, coaches, partners, and fans.
Mohan stated that IPG and Sri Lanka Cricket acted quickly to ensure the Jaffna Kings’ continued participation without disruption. He assured that all operational aspects, including player contracts, staff commitments, and team logistics, are being managed smoothly. The tournament is expected to proceed as planned.
SLC has reiterated its strong commitment to protecting the integrity of the tournament, stating it will not tolerate any form of corruption, misconduct, or foul play from any stakeholder. The organisation has implemented measures to ensure the tournament adheres to high ethical and integrity standards, with a zero-tolerance policy towards unethical practices.
The Anti-Corruption Unit of Sri Lanka Cricket has been collaborating with the SIU to enhance the league’s anti-corruption framework. Additionally, Integrity Mentors, an independent organisation specialising in anti-corruption and sports integrity, has been engaged to offer expert support and education throughout the tournament. This aims to ensure the LPL is conducted in a fair, transparent, and corruption-free environment.
On the field, the Bhanuka Rajapaksa-led Jaffna Kings have started their campaign positively, securing two victories in their initial three matches.
