Ashok Sharma’s International Debut
Ashok Sharma, an India fast bowler, made his international debut in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare. He received his maiden India cap before the toss on Thursday. The 24-year-old pacer, who hails from Rajasthan, was presented with his cap by bowling coach Sunil Joshi.
Following the cap presentation, Ashok Sharma expressed his emotions, describing the moment as a “dream come true.” He dedicated this significant milestone to his elder brother, Akshay Sharma, acknowledging his brother’s sacrifice as instrumental in shaping his cricketing journey.
In the match, Ashok Sharma bowled four overs, finishing with figures of 0/29. India secured a seven-wicket victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
A Brother’s Sacrifice and a Dream Fulfilled
Ashok Sharma’s path to international cricket is marked by perseverance and family support. Growing up in Rampura, a village near Jaipur, both Ashok and his elder brother, Akshay Sharma, shared a passion for cricket. However, financial limitations meant the family could not support both brothers in pursuing their cricketing aspirations.
Akshay Sharma made the decision to set aside his own cricketing ambitions so that Ashok could attend inter-district Under-16 trials. This act of selflessness proved to be a turning point in Ashok’s career. Stand-in head coach VVS Laxman conveyed a special message to Ashok before his debut, highlighting the honour of representing the country and acknowledging the hard work and performances that led to this opportunity.
Ashok Sharma’s journey included a chance appearance at the Red Bull Speedster competition, which opened doors for him to become a net bowler for Rajasthan Royals. This eventually paved the way for his breakthrough in domestic cricket.
Rise to the International Stage
Ashok Sharma’s rise in cricket has been notable. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 22 wickets. This performance led to an IPL contract with Gujarat Titans, where he gained attention for bowling a delivery clocked at 154.2 kmph, which was the fastest delivery of IPL 2026.
Despite not taking a wicket in his debut match against Zimbabwe, Ashok Sharma consistently bowled with lively pace, showcasing the qualities that contributed to his selection for the national team. In the same match, India skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field. Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also featured in the playing eleven for India.
For the first time, India also named concussion substitutes for specific positions ahead of the match, including Suryansh Shedge (Batter, All-rounder), Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper), Harsh Dubey (spinner), and Yash Thakur (pace bowler). Zimbabwe batter Milton Shumba was ruled out of the T20I series due to a right hamstring injury, with Innocent Kaia named as his replacement.
