IPL’s expanding valuation

The Indian Premier League’s (IPL) business value has significantly increased, now estimated at USD 20.6 billion. This represents a rise of over 11% in the past year, according to a report by the US-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey. The league’s robust commercial model and strong appeal to investors are highlighted as key factors in this growth, positioning the IPL as one of the world’s most valuable sports brands.

The 2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study by Houlihan Lokey noted that the IPL’s value grew by 10.3% over the last year. This surge underscores its standing in the global sports landscape, with only the NFL ranking higher on a per-match basis globally. The league, which commenced in 2008, has become a significant revenue generator for the Board of Control for Cricket in India and was estimated to contribute more than USD 11 billion annually to the Indian economy in 2020.

Franchise acquisitions and investor confidence

Recent ownership changes involving two prominent franchises, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals, have further demonstrated strong investor confidence in the IPL. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the champions for the past two seasons and home to former India captain Virat Kohli, maintained its position as the league’s most valuable franchise with a brand value of USD 312 million.

A consortium that includes the US asset management giant Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group, and Times of India Group acquired the Bengaluru franchise in a deal valued at nearly USD 1.8 billion. This transaction, announced in March, marks the most expensive franchise deal in IPL history. Separately, in May, the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla acquired Rajasthan Royals for USD 1.65 billion. These acquisitions reflect the premium attached to established teams within the league and the accelerating participation of private capital.

Harsh Talikoti, a director in Houlihan Lokey’s Financial and Valuation Advisory business, noted that cricket’s evolution into a globally owned, institutionally backed asset class has accelerated in 2026. He added that the IPL continues to redefine the global sports landscape, and these latest transactions further illustrate the confidence investors have in the long-term value creation opportunities within the league.

Driving factors behind IPL’s success

The IPL’s commercial model, which integrates broadcast revenues, sponsorship, merchandising, and franchise investment, consistently attracts leading players and major investors. This comprehensive approach has contributed to the league’s sustained growth and appeal. Franchise valuations have reached new highs, and the league’s commercial ecosystem continues to diversify.

The IPL represents a unique convergence of sport, media, and consumer opportunities, underpinned by strong revenue visibility, disciplined cost structures, and an expanding global audience. The league’s stand-alone brand value also saw a rise of 10.3% over the past year, reaching USD 4.3 billion. This consistent growth reflects a second consecutive year of double-digit growth in the IPL’s business value, according to Houlihan Lokey’s study.

The league’s ability to attract significant investment and maintain high franchise valuations underscores its position as a premier sporting entity. The continued interest from major investors and the increasing business value signify a robust future for the IPL.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with its USD 312 million brand value, remains a testament to the league’s commercial strength, as highlighted in the 2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study.
