England has ascended to the top position in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, following a series of victories at home against the current T20 World Champions. This achievement concludes a period of over 1,600 days during which India held the number one spot, a run that began in February 2022.
The shift in rankings occurred after India experienced a 4-0 T20I series defeat, which included earlier losses to Ireland. England‘s captain had previously stated that securing the top ranking was a team objective ahead of the final T20I match.
Dominant Batting Performances
In the fifth T20I held in Southampton, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook were central to England‘s performance, forming a 233-run partnership for the second wicket. This stand contributed significantly to England posting a total of 257/3 in their 20 overs. Buttler scored 131 runs off 64 balls, while Brook remained unbeaten with 95 runs from 45 deliveries. This partnership set a new record for any wicket in the history of T20 Internationals.
Buttler‘s century included his quickest half-century in T20Is during the match. Brook also reached his half-century in just 19 balls. The combined efforts of Buttler and Brook saw them hit 16 sixes, with eight from each player. Their hitting prowess was evident at the Rose Bowl, where Shreyas Iyer, India‘s captain, chose to field after winning the toss.
Despite an early wicket by Prasidh Krishna, who removed Phil Salt, England‘s batting continued to dominate. The partnership between Buttler and Brook was particularly effective against the Indian bowling attack, with Axar Patel conceding 63 runs in 4 overs and Prince Yadav giving away 60 runs in his four overs.
India’s Series Performance and Bowling Challenges
India‘s chase in the fifth T20I concluded with a score of 201/8 in their 20 overs, resulting in a 56-run defeat. Ishan Kishan scored 56 runs off 35 balls, and Tilak Varma contributed 53 runs off 25 balls. This marked India‘s sixth loss out of seven matches played under captain Shreyas Iyer.
The series began with a match in Chester-le-Street affected by rain, but England went on to win the subsequent four games. This included handing India their largest defeat in T20Is in Nottingham and successfully chasing 159 runs in 13.4 overs in Bristol. The Indian team, under a new regime led by Shreyas Iyer, has not secured a victory since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad earlier this year.
The Indian bowling unit faced significant pressure throughout the series. Suryansh Shedge, who was brought into the team due to Harshit Rana‘s hamstring injury, conceded 39 runs in 3 overs. Prince Yadav also struggled, giving away 21 runs in one over. The challenges faced by the Indian bowlers were highlighted by the aggressive batting of Buttler and Brook.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly called for a review of the team’s performance following this series. The team’s strategy, which had previously seen success on home grounds, faced difficulties in the different conditions encountered during the tour of the UK. The series concluded with England completing a 4-0 whitewash against India.
England‘s comprehensive victory in the series has solidified their position at the top of the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.
