Chelsea has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of midfielder Morgan Rogers. The deal is understood to be worth £117 million, with the attacking midfielder set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, including an option for an additional year. A medical examination for Rogers is scheduled for Monday.
This potential transfer would mark a new record for Chelsea, surpassing the money paid for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023. It would also reportedly exceed the British record fee previously agreed upon by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier this summer.
Rogers’ move to Chelsea
Morgan Rogers, who is 23 years old, has expressed a desire to join Chelsea. The prospect of working with new manager Xabi Alonso and the club’s overall project are cited as significant attractions for the player. While Arsenal also showed interest in the England international, Rogers has reportedly chosen Chelsea as his preferred destination.
Rogers’ current contract with Aston Villa extends until 2030, following new terms signed in November 2024. These terms added a year to his previous agreement and adjusted his salary to reflect his standing within Unai Emery’s squad. He initially moved to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee, with an additional in add-ons. As part of that deal, Middlesbrough retains a 20 per cent sell-on clause, which could see the Championship club earn a significant amount from this transfer, depending on triggered add-ons.
The former West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City academy player has established himself as a prominent attacking midfielder in the Premier League over the past two seasons. During this period, he has accumulated 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances for Villa. In the 2025-26 campaign, Rogers contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions, a season in which Villa qualified for the Champions League and secured the Europa League title.
Rogers received his first senior call-up for England in November 2024. He has participated in all six of his country’s matches at the current World Cup, starting in the final group-stage game against Panama and the match against Argentina. He is currently with the England squad in the U.S. for Saturday’s third-place play-off against France, having assisted England’s only goal in the semi-final with a cross for Anthony Gordon.
Tactical considerations and squad impact
Aston Villa was reportedly aware of the likelihood of Rogers’ departure but sought a substantial fee. The club plans to reinvest some of these funds, with targets including Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye and West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville for wing positions. Villa has already spent on Johan Manzambi, who shares a similar profile to Rogers, and for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, who underwent his medical on Friday.
The arrival of Rogers raises questions about his integration into Chelsea’s squad, particularly concerning his impact on Cole Palmer. Both players are capable of operating in various attacking roles. New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has demonstrated tactical flexibility in his coaching career, employing different formations at previous clubs. At Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso often utilized a 3-4-2-1 attacking system, with wing-backs providing width and two No. 10s occupying half-spaces to feed a central striker. This system could potentially accommodate Rogers and Palmer playing alongside each other in the No. 10 roles, with Rogers potentially forming a partnership with new signing Marco Palestra.
