What is going on with Man Utd's lack of summer signings?
What is going on with Man Utd's lack of summer signings?

Midfield targets and missed opportunities

Manchester United have reportedly missed out on two key midfield targets this summer. Manchester City agreed a deal for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m. Additionally, Tottenham reached an agreement to pay West Ham £85m for Mateus Fernandes. United had shown interest in both players, but the cost of bringing them to Old Trafford was a factor.

The club’s recruitment strategy is currently under scrutiny as no new players have arrived. However, United sources maintain that their approach is sound, citing the success of the previous summer’s transfers as evidence. The transfer window is still open, and the club is exploring alternative options.

One potential signing is Ederson from Serie A club Atalanta, with a £35m deal agreed. However, his medical examination is pending his participation with the Brazil squad in an ongoing competition. He was called up late to the Brazil squad, and his medical will not happen until Carlo Ancelotti‘s side are out of the competition. They are scheduled to play Norway in the last 16 on 5 July.

Alternative midfield options

United are looking to add at least one, and potentially two, more midfield players. Among the names linked with the club is Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott. However, Arsenal has been informed that the player is not for sale, and his current club is aiming to secure him on a long-term contract. Scott was noted for his performance for Bournemouth, making 39 appearances, scoring four goals, and providing one assist. He has an overall record of six goals and five assists in 89 appearances for Bournemouth in all competitions.

Other midfielders mentioned as potential targets include Tyler Adams, also from Bournemouth, and Carlos Baleba of Brighton. Felix Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy player, is another name being considered. Nmecha is familiar to United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, who previously headed City’s academy. Nmecha scored five goals and registered three assists in 42 appearances for Dortmund. He has a total of 13 goals and eight assists in 112 matches for the club. Standing at 6ft 3in, Nmecha is said to be keen on a return to English football.

The situation of Real Madrid‘s France international Aurelien Tchouameni is also being monitored. Tchouameni has been a vital player for Real Madrid since his arrival from Monaco in 2022 and is currently playing for France. Real Madrid are reportedly determined to keep him, and he has a contract at the Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2028. While a departure has not been entirely ruled out, the general feeling is that he will remain with Real Madrid.

Lessons from previous transfer windows

This summer’s transfer activity for Manchester United has drawn comparisons to their 2022 window. Four years ago, the club spent a significant period pursuing Frenkie de Jong, ultimately without success. United had agreed a deal worth an initial £63m with Barcelona for De Jong, with a further £8.5m in add-ons, but were unable to convince him to move to Old Trafford.

Following this, United pivoted and signed Casemiro from Real Madrid for a fee of up to £70m. Casemiro recently departed Old Trafford this summer after an emotional farewell. His departure, along with Jadon Sancho, means that out-of-contract players have now left the club. Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana remain Manchester United players. The only confirmed departure with a fee attached is Rasmus Hojlund, whose £38m exit was confirmed in May.

The club’s current approach suggests a reliance on data-led recruitment, which has generated a long list of potential midfield targets. The decision to not match Tottenham’s bid for Fernandes indicates a careful approach to player valuation, especially for younger prospects. The transfer window is long, and the club aims to secure players who fit their profile and are available at the right price, with the window closing for business this summer.
