ENG vs IND, 1st T20I, India tour of England, 2026 - Commentary

The opening T20I match between India and England at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street was called off due to persistent rain. Despite India posting a competitive total, the weather conditions prevented England from beginning their chase, leading to a no-result outcome for the first match of the series.

India, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, recovered from an initial setback to score 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was highlighted by significant contributions from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer, who both registered half-centuries. However, heavy rain arrived shortly after the innings break and continued, making the outfield unfit for play and ultimately forcing the abandonment of the match.

India’s innings highlights

India’s innings started precariously, with Sanju Samson dismissed early by Saqib Mahmood. A run-out involving Ishan Kishan further compounded their troubles, leaving the team struggling at 6/2. This early pressure set the stage for a recovery effort from the middle order.

Abhishek Sharma then launched a counterattack, demonstrating a fearless approach against England’s seamers. The left-handed batter reached his fifty in just 20 deliveries, showcasing an explosive display of strokeplay. During his innings, Sharma also achieved a milestone, becoming the fastest batter from a Full Member nation to complete 100 sixes in T20 Internationals.

Sharma and Shreyas Iyer formed a crucial partnership for the third wicket, adding 82 runs to stabilise India’s innings. Abhishek Sharma’s impressive knock concluded at 59 runs off 24 balls, an innings that included six fours and four sixes, before he was trapped lbw by Sam Curran.

Following Sharma’s departure, skipper Shreyas Iyer took charge, guiding the innings through the middle overs. Iyer played a composed knock of 68 runs off 47 deliveries, featuring six boundaries and a six. His innings was a blend of calculated aggression and effective strike rotation. Notably, during this innings, Iyer also surpassed the landmark of 5,000 international runs, becoming the latest Indian batter to achieve this feat.

Despite Saqib Mahmood’s return to dismiss Iyer, finishing with figures of 3/33, India managed to add valuable runs towards the end of their innings. All-rounder Shivam Dube contributed significantly, remaining unbeaten on 42 runs off just 21 balls. His quickfire innings included three sixes and two fours, helping to propel India’s total to 189/7.

Match abandonment and series outlook

The rain began towards the end of India’s innings and intensified during the break. Despite efforts by the ground staff, the playing surface could not be prepared before the cut-off time for a shortened game. With more than 40 minutes remaining for the cut-off for a five-over game, the umpires made the decision to call off the match.

Consequently, England did not get the opportunity to commence their reply to India’s total of 189/7. The continuous rain throughout the evening left no scope for further play, leading to the official abandonment without a single delivery bowled in England’s innings.

Both teams will now look ahead to the next fixture in the series. The second contest of the five-match series is scheduled to be held in Manchester on July 4.
