Switzerland claims Group B

Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 in a World Cup match, securing first place in Group B. The victory means Switzerland will continue to play in Vancouver for the round of 32 on July 2, while Canada will travel to Inglewood, California, for their next match on Sunday. The match saw a scoreless first half before a burst of goals in the second period.

Ruben Vargas put the Swiss ahead early in the second half. Shortly after, Johan Manzambi, who had previously scored two goals in a 4-1 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina, added another goal in the 57th minute, extending Switzerland’s lead. These goals came within a 12-minute span at the start of the second half, rewarding coach Murat Yakin’s decision to start both players.

Canada, needing a win or a draw to secure the top spot and remain on home soil, found themselves trailing. Coach Jesse Marsch had considered using captain Alphonso Davies as a decoy, though Davies was not ready to play. Marsch later stated that Davies would be prepared for the match in Los Angeles.

Canada’s journey continues

Canada managed to pull a goal back in the 76th minute. Substitute Promise David scored with a volley on his first touch of the game, approximately one minute after entering the match. This goal gave Canada hope, with the prime minister, Mark Carney, reportedly roaring his approval.

Despite the late goal, Canada’s efforts were not enough to overcome Switzerland’s lead. The 2-1 defeat means Canada finished second in Group B, advancing to the knockout round for the first time in their history. Their next fixture will be against the second-place finisher in Group B.

The match was played in a crackling atmosphere at BC Place, with the closed roof and drawn curtains contributing to the humidity and electricity inside. This environment was what Marsch and Canada had aimed to create, fostering a passionate football nation.

Tactical decisions and team dynamics

Marsch faced challenges with an injury-hit squad. The absence of Ismaël Koné, who was seen on crutches after sustaining a leg injury, was notable. Stephen Eustáquio, the vice-captain, was not fit enough to start, leading Marsch to deploy both Nathan Saliba and Mathieu Choinière as replacements. These changes were made against a richly experienced Swiss midfield, including Granit Xhaka.

Yakin, on the other hand, made four changes to his squad, with Manzambi and Vargas starting. The Swiss coach expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating they delivered as a team and deserved their position. Yakin will aim to end a run of seven consecutive defeats in World Cup knockout games when Switzerland plays on July 2.

During the first half, Ricardo Rodriguez initiated a play that saw Breel Embolo bearing down on goal, but Maxime Crépeau made a crucial save. A hydration break seemed to shift momentum, with Canada appearing sharper towards the end of the half. An update on the screen indicated that Bosnia was leading Qatar 2-0, which briefly raised concerns about Canada’s position, but a goal from Qatar eased the tension.

The second half began with Switzerland quickly capitalizing on defensive errors from Canada. Manzambi fired a ball across from the left, reaching Vargas at the back post, who scored. Later, Manzambi benefited from further defensive mistakes by Derek Cornelius and Luc de Fougerolles, with Embolo setting him up to score past Crépeau. These quick goals solidified Switzerland’s lead and made Canada’s path to victory more challenging.

In another Group B match, Bosnia defeated Qatar 3-1. Bosnia could still advance as a third-place team, while Qatar has been eliminated from the tournament. Canada’s next match is scheduled for Sunday in Inglewood, California.
