Sooryavanshi’s historic performance
In the third and final T20 International against Zimbabwe in Harare, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made history by becoming the first player in men’s international cricket to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. The left-handed opener scored 81 runs off 48 balls, helping India reach a total of 192/5 after electing to bat first. This achievement surpasses Nepal’s Kushal Malla, who previously held the record with one 50-plus score before turning 16.
Sooryavanshi’s innings showcased his adaptability, starting cautiously with 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls. His strokeplay included a boundary off a yorker from Brad Evans and a 102-metre six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary against Wesley Madhevere.
During his innings, Sooryavanshi formed a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 29 runs. He then added another 50 runs with captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 27. His impressive knock concluded when Wesley Madhevere dismissed him, with Brad Evans completing the catch at long-off.
Team performance and series sweep
India’s total of 192/5 proved competitive on a pitch that offered assistance to bowlers. The team’s batting momentum had grown throughout the series, with Ishan Kishan rediscovering his form and Tilak Varma providing consistency in the middle order. Despite Abhishek Sharma’s lean run with the bat, his bowling contributions have highlighted his all-round value to the squad.
The series victory marked a significant achievement for India, as they secured a rare clean sweep against Zimbabwe. This 3-0 series win is their first T20I whitewash over Zimbabwe since 2010. The team, under new captain Shreyas Iyer, responded impressively, restoring confidence after previous defeats during their tour of Ireland and England.
The final match provided an opportunity for India to test the depth of their squad. Changes were anticipated, especially after fast bowler Prince Yadav sustained a hamstring injury in the second T20I. Zimbabwe’s challenge
Zimbabwe aimed to avoid a whitewash in the series. While Brian Bennett showed glimpses of promise, the host team struggled to match India’s discipline and consistency throughout the matches. The conditions in Harare, including a batting-friendly pitch and favourable weather, were set for an entertaining conclusion to the series.
After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India’s scoring rate slowed, with the middle order adding 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh’s 25 runs off 14 balls helped push India closer to the 200-run mark.
Looking ahead
The management will continue to assess fringe players and build squad depth for future international assignments. The series win helps to build momentum for India ahead of a demanding international season.
Abhishek Sharma’s recent form has seen him score 10, 16, 3, 1, 8, and 2 in his last six innings, dating back to the third T20I against England in Nottingham last month.
