India has secured its initial medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, even prior to the official opening ceremony. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain is guaranteed at least a bronze in the women’s boxing competition, providing an early boost for the nation’s contingent.
Borgohain, an athlete from Assam, received direct entry into the semifinals of her 75kg weight category after being granted a bye. Given that all losing semifinalists in Commonwealth Games boxing events are awarded bronze medals, her place on the podium is assured before she even steps into the ring for her first bout.
Her campaign is scheduled to commence on July 31, when she will compete against T.K.B.P. Taafaki. This match will determine who advances to the gold medal bout, with Borgohain already having secured a medal regardless of the outcome.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will feature a reduced sports programme compared to previous editions. Despite this, India has dispatched a 124-member contingent to the event, with aspirations of enhancing its rich legacy at the Games. The country aims to maintain a two-decade-long streak of top-five finishes at the Commonwealth Games, with boxing, weightlifting, and athletics identified as key disciplines for achieving this goal.
India’s Diverse Participation and Key Athletes
The Indian contingent will participate in eight sports for able-bodied athletes. These include athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, bowls, and swimming. Additionally, India will compete in five para disciplines, encompassing para-athletics, para-powerlifting, para-swimming, para-track cycling, and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are noted for being the leanest in decades, featuring only 10 sports across four venues. This makes it the smallest event in over 30 years, with approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations expected to participate. The absence of disciplines such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and shooting is anticipated to significantly influence India’s overall medal prospects.
India’s official campaign is set to begin on Thursday with two lawn bowls matches, preceding the opening ceremony later the same day. The diverse event schedule for India spans multiple sports, with competitions spread across July and August.
Star Athletes and Medal Expectations
Among the prominent Indian athletes to watch is Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who is a major attraction in athletics. The reigning world champion will be looking to reclaim the Commonwealth title he secured at Gold Coast 2018, having missed Birmingham 2022 due to injury. The athletics events are scheduled to run from July 27 to August 1.
Weightlifting is also expected to be a significant source of medals for India. The challenge in this discipline will be spearheaded by Olympic silver medallist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu. Other notable Indian athletes include Sajan Prakash in swimming.
With Lovlina Borgohain already having secured a podium finish, India has commenced its Glasgow 2026 campaign with a strong start, even before the Games have officially commenced. Her guaranteed medal provides positive momentum for the contingent as they prepare for their respective competitions, with her first bout scheduled for July 31.
