Squad fitness update ahead of semi-final
England are set to face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final with a largely fit squad. Head coach Thomas Tuchel has only two players unavailable for the crucial match. Midfielder Jordan Henderson is still recovering from surgery after sustaining a broken arm during celebrations following England’s victory over Mexico in the last 16. Additionally, defender Jarell Quansah is suspended for the semi-final, having received a red card in the same fixture.
Despite these absences, Tuchel appears to have various options as he finalises his starting lineup. The England boss has not yet used the same starting defensive unit in consecutive World Cup matches. However, there is consideration that he might retain the defence that began the quarter-final against Norway.
This defensive quartet included Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Marc Guehi, and Nico O’Reilly. Tuchel was reportedly impressed with their performance during the 2-1 win over Norway. Konsa, an Aston Villa defender, had been substituted against Norway due to cramp, but he is expected to be available for selection at right-back for the semi-final.
Midfielder Declan Rice, whose preparation for the Norway game was significantly affected by illness, has shown improvement. Reports on Monday indicated optimism regarding his condition, and he trained fully on Tuesday. Rice is now expected to start in Atlanta, potentially alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield against the reigning world champions.
There is also a possibility that Reece James, the Chelsea captain, could be recalled to the starting lineup after coming on as a second-half substitute against Norway. Bukayo Saka, who also made an impact from the bench, is another player who could potentially start the semi-final.
England’s mentality for the challenge
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has emphasised the importance of maintaining composure against Argentina, particularly given the historical rivalry between the two nations. The semi-final in Atlanta marks the first time England will face Argentina in a World Cup since 2002. Pickford believes that keeping their focus and not getting drawn into confrontations will be crucial for victory.
Pickford noted that throughout the tournament, England’s players have demonstrated a desire to win titles without engaging in scuffles, maintaining respect within the game. He highlighted the team’s mentality, stating that they reset and continue playing regardless of referee decisions, allowing their football to speak for itself. This approach, he suggested, prevents them from getting distracted by external factors.
When asked about facing Lionel Messi for the first time, the Everton goalkeeper acknowledged Messi’s quality, having watched him extensively as a child. However, Pickford stressed that the team cannot focus solely on Messi, as Argentina is a strong team overall. He underscored the need for England to perform at their best to reach the final.
Authorities in Atlanta are on high alert in anticipation of the semi-final, with thousands of supporters from both countries expected. Many seats in the stadium are unsegregated. Pickford recognised the significance of the match but reiterated the importance of England not getting overwhelmed by the occasion.
He described it as a football match with passionate fans, highlighting how football brings nations together. Pickford stated that both England and Argentina are proud nations, but the football itself will be the deciding factor. He also mentioned that England, Argentina, Spain, and France are considered the top four nations in the world rankings, all vying for a spot in the final.
Pickford was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of the European Championship in 2021 and 2024. Despite not having won major silverware at club level, he affirmed that his focus remains entirely on the upcoming semi-final. He described reaching the final as a dream and emphasised that the immediate goal is to overcome Argentina on Wednesday.
The American referee Ismail Elfath, who officiates in MLS, has been confirmed by Fifa to officiate the game in Atlanta, having previously overseen Norway’s victory over Brazil in the last 16.
