Argentina faces potential FIFA disciplinary action after displaying Falklands banner

Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA following their celebration after defeating England in the World Cup semi-final. Players displayed a banner supporting their country’s claims to the Falkland Islands, which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (The Falklands are Argentine).

The incident occurred after Argentina’s dramatic late comeback in Atlanta, where they scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory over England, booking their place in the final against Spain. The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, have been the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina.

The two nations engaged in a conflict over the islands, located 300 miles off Argentina’s east coast, from April to June 1982. This 74-day conflict resulted in the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen, along with three people from the islands.

Historical Context and Previous Incidents

In 2014, FIFA imposed a fine of £20,000 on the Argentine Football Association for a similar display. Their players had held up a banner with the same message before a friendly match against Slovenia. World football’s governing body stated that the gesture violated rules concerning political action and team misconduct.

Ahead of the semi-final match, Argentina’s vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, made several comments regarding the Falkland Islands dispute. She posted on social media, referring to England as “pirate usurpers” and stating that the match was “about standing up to the invaders.”

After Argentina’s victory, Villarruel again posted online, writing, “The Falklands are Argentine.” She added, “They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.” She also shared a video that appeared to show Argentine soldiers.

Argentina players also reportedly sang chants referencing the Falklands and football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi after their 3-2 win against Egypt in the last 16.

Manager’s Stance and Match Security

Despite the political undertones, Argentina’s manager, Lionel Scaloni, had expressed his reluctance to mix football with politics before the semi-final. Scaloni stated, “The reality is that this is a football match. I can’t mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago.”

He further commented, “It was a very sad period in our history, and there isn’t much we can do about it, that’s the reality. Things are happening elsewhere in the world, and we criticise the existence of war. We certainly remember those people, of course. But it is a football match – we shouldn’t confuse the two.”

The semi-final match itself, which saw England lose to late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, was conducted under heightened security measures. These measures were implemented due to the historical tensions between the two nations.

The contest marked a significant moment for Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who faced England for the first time in his international career. Messi had played against every other FIFA World Cup-winning nation but had not previously encountered the Three Lions.

Messi described the match as “special” following Argentina’s 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals. He noted, “It’s a special match because it’s my first time. I’ve played against everyone except England. And it’s special, as I said before, because they’re a big team, a powerhouse. It’s always nice to play against teams like that, in matches like this, and especially in the semi-finals of a World Cup.”

This semi-final revived one of international football’s long-standing rivalries. England and Argentina had not met in a competitive fixture since the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where England secured a 1-0 victory. Argentina will now proceed to the final to face Spain.
