The Netherlands faced Morocco in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. Issa Diop’s stoppage-time header for Morocco cancelled out Cody Gakpo’s second-half goal for the Dutch. The game was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, where Morocco secured a 3-2 victory.

During the shootout, Yassine Bounou of Morocco saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, and Ismael Saibari converted Morocco’s decisive kick, advancing the Atlas Lions to the Round of 16.

Reflecting on His Tenure

Koeman described his departure as a difficult choice, citing the close relationships he had developed with both players and staff. He expressed gratitude to everyone involved with the national team during his two spells as coach, acknowledging the disappointment surrounding the team’s early exit from the tournament.

The Netherlands had entered the tournament with aspirations of challenging for the title, aiming for at least a spot in the semifinals. Despite finishing first in their group, the team struggled with consistent performances before their elimination in the first knockout match.

Koeman faced criticism for his tactical approach against Morocco, particularly his decision to employ five defenders. He defended this choice after the match, stating that the formation helped reduce the number of chances conceded compared to the group stage. However, the Oranje offered limited attacking threat for significant periods and failed to maintain their lead after Gakpo’s goal in the 72nd minute.

Looking Ahead for Koeman and the KNVB

Koeman stated that he now intends to dedicate more time to his family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren. He views this as the appropriate and logical decision at this point in his life, especially after a challenging period for his family.

Nigel de Jong, director of top-level football at the KNVB, confirmed the federation respects Koeman’s decision and thanked him for his commitment to the national team. The KNVB has initiated its post-World Cup evaluation and will begin the process of identifying candidates to succeed Koeman.

The federation faces some urgency as the Netherlands are scheduled to commence their UEFA Nations League campaign in September. However, De Jong indicated that officials would take the necessary time to ensure the correct appointment is made.

Koeman’s first stint as Netherlands coach began in 2018, leading the team to the 2019 UEFA Nations League final. He departed in 2020 to manage Barcelona before returning to the Dutch national team at the start of 2023. During his second spell, the Netherlands reached the Euro 2024 semifinals, where they lost to England.

Across both periods, Koeman managed the national team in 64 official matches. He also represented the Netherlands as a player 78 times and was part of the team that won the 1988 European Championship. His second coaching spell concludes with one of the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup eliminations in recent history.

Koeman expressed his sentiments on Instagram, thanking players, staff, the KNVB, and supporters. He conveyed mixed feelings about his departure, stating that he would have preferred to conclude his time with a world title, a dream that remained unfulfilled.

He added that pride prevails, reflecting on everything football has brought him, the people he has met, and the opportunity to turn his passion into his profession. He concluded by thanking everyone for years of trust, criticism, support, disappointments, and successes.
