Taylor Fritz, ranked number 10 globally, achieved his 250th hardcourt victory on Monday at the ATP and WTA Washington Open. The American third seed defeated Zizou Bergs of Belgium, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
Fritz completed his match against Bergs in 79 minutes, securing a 6-3, 6-4 win. This performance places him in contention for his 11th career ATP title, with his last title win occurring at Eastbourne last year.
Match Details and Player Performances
During his opening match, Fritz delivered eight aces and successfully defended all four break points he faced. He expressed satisfaction with his ability to navigate critical moments, stating that he felt the momentum shifted in his favor after serving out the first set and gaining a break in the second.
The victory sets up a second-round encounter for Fritz against either fellow American Tommy Paul or Kamil Majchrzak of Poland. The match between Paul and Majchrzak is scheduled for Tuesday.
Bergs, who is ranked in the top 30 on the ATP Tour, had previously met Fritz once before this year on the grass courts of the Halle Open, where Fritz won in three sets. In the Washington match, Fritz began with an ace, setting a strong tone for his performance.
In the first set, Fritz secured a break against Bergs in the fourth game. Despite facing three break points and five deuces later in the set, he managed to hold serve and close out the set 6-3. The second set saw Fritz gain another early break. Although his serve form reportedly dipped slightly, he maintained his lead, preventing Bergs from initiating a comeback.
Fritz won 80 percent of his first serves that landed, even though he landed less than 50 percent of them. He also won 71 percent of his second serves. This strong serving performance was key to his victory, as he secured the necessary breaks in each set without being truly pushed.
Other Tournament Highlights
In other men’s matches, Lorenzo Muzetti, the fourth seed, advanced after his Italian compatriot Matteo Arnaldi retired while down 6-0, 3-1. Alejandro Tabilo of Chile also progressed, defeating Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
Defending champion and top seed Alex de Minaur of Australia was not in action on Monday. De Minaur, who secured his 11th career ATP title in February by winning his third consecutive Rotterdam Open crown, is slated to face Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in his first-round match.
On the women’s side of the tournament, defending champion and seventh seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada defeated Magda Linette of Poland 6-1, 6-4 in 79 minutes. Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, commented on her solid game, noting that she avoided giving away too many free points.
Fernandez will next compete against either Alexandra Eala of the Philippines or Zheng Qinwen of China. Additionally, Emma Navarro, the eighth seed from the US, overcame compatriot Sofia Kenin 6-0, 7-5. Navarro is scheduled to play against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round, who won her match against Clara Tauson of Denmark with scores of 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
In women’s doubles, Venus Williams, a 46-year-old former world number one and winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, partnered with Diana Shnaider of Russia. They secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the team of Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway and American Quinn Gleason.
Meanwhile, Jack Draper of Britain withdrew from the event due to a left arm injury, having also missed Wimbledon. American Mackenzie McDonald entered the field as a lucky loser to replace him.
