Shreyas Iyer, captain of the India T20I team, achieved a notable milestone in his captaincy career before the first T20I match against Zimbabwe in Harare. He won his eighth consecutive toss as captain in T20 Internationals, surpassing the previous record held by former captain MS Dhoni.
Iyer’s streak of eight consecutive toss wins extends from June to July 2026. This record now places him ahead of Dhoni, who had a streak of seven toss wins between 2010 and 2012. Other Indian captains with significant toss-winning streaks include Virat Kohli with six consecutive wins and both Rohit Sharma and Dhoni with streaks of five.
After winning the toss, Iyer chose for his team to bowl first. He mentioned that while it was his first time playing in Harare, observations from the practice wickets suggested good pace and bounce on the surface. He also acknowledged Zimbabwe‘s recent performance, noting their brilliant play over the past couple of years and the effective execution of strengths by their batsmen and bowlers.
India secures series victory
Iyer’s leadership also saw India secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Zimbabwe. The series win was sealed with a dominant 90-run victory in the second T20I. This triumph marked Iyer’s first series win as India‘s T20I captain.
The second T20I saw India recover from an early setback, posting a total of 219/5 after batting first. Ishan Kishan contributed 81 runs, and Tilak Varma remained unbeaten with 60 runs. The bowlers then successfully defended this total, dismissing Zimbabwe for 129 runs in 17.5 overs.
Iyer highlighted the team’s fearless approach, which he believes allowed players to express themselves without being hindered by past performances. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, staying in the present, and maximising every opportunity.
Batting and bowling performances praised
During the second T20I, India faced an early challenge, being 29/2 after losing Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma formed crucial partnerships that shifted the momentum. Kishan first added 66 runs with Iyer, followed by a 94-run stand with Varma, which propelled India past the 200-run mark.
Iyer praised the batting display of Kishan and Varma, describing their shots as “beautiful” and pleasing to watch. He noted that the team’s initial expectation for a par score was between 180 and 200, but reaching 220 was an added bonus. The Indian captain also commended the bowling unit for their discipline and precise execution of plans, which led to bundling out Zimbabwe for approximately 130 runs.
The Indian squad for the opening T20I featured a youthful lineup including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh, alongside captain Iyer. Zimbabwe, in turn, gave T20I debuts to Newman Nyamhuri and Ben Curran. Milton Shumba was replaced by Innocent Kaia in the squad due to a hamstring injury.
Injury concern ahead of final match
Ahead of the final T20I match, India encountered an injury concern. Fast bowler Prince Yadav sustained a hamstring injury during his second over, forcing him to leave the field after taking two wickets. Iyer confirmed that this injury might lead to some changes in the team for the series finale.
The Zimbabwe captain, Sikandar Raza, commented on the Harare pitch, stating it was not typical for the venue and anticipated a high-scoring game despite some early assistance for seam bowlers. The first T20I saw Iyer win the toss and elect to bowl first, a decision based on the perceived conditions of the pitch.
The playing XIs for the match included Zimbabwe‘s Brian Bennett, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Ben Curran, Dion Myers, Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, Wessly Madhevere, Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri, Richard Ngarava, and Blessing Muzarabani.
