Lando Norris secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking a significant achievement for McLaren. The win came after an early contest with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, at the Hungaroring circuit.
Norris, who started from pole position, initially lost the lead to Piastri during a spirited opening lap. Piastri capitalised on Norris running wide at the second turn, taking track position on a circuit known for its challenging overtaking opportunities. Despite Piastri holding the lead, Norris demonstrated stronger pace throughout the race.
The turning point in the race occurred after the second round of pit stops. McLaren opted to pit Piastri just before the halfway point of the 70-lap race, while Norris remained on track with older tyres. Norris managed to slightly outpace Piastri, who encountered lapped traffic. During this period, Piastri made contact with Williams’ Carlos Sainz, who reportedly did not see the Australian driver at Turn 2.
Norris eventually pitted on Lap 40 and emerged ahead of his teammate. He then maintained his lead and dominated the rest of the race. Piastri, who was in a strong position for second place, later retired from the race due to a gearbox issue. This mechanical problem led to a late Virtual Safety Car with 14 laps remaining.
Piastri reflected on his race, stating that the gearbox issue occurred while he was on his normal line. He mentioned that leading the race in Hungary was a highlight, but things went “pretty downhill from there.” He also noted that the pace on hard tyres was not strong and that being crashed into by a backmarker was an unexpected event. Piastri’s pit stop was described as fine, with the team aiming to beat Lewis Hamilton.
The victory was a testament to McLaren’s significant upgrade package for the Hungarian event, which propelled them to the front of the grid. Norris had shown strong form throughout the weekend, topping the timesheets in FP3 and Qualifying. His ability to extend his stints on older tyres and then benefit from fresh tyres was crucial to his win.
Max Verstappen finished in second place, with Kimi Antonelli securing third. Ferrari drivers Hamilton and Charles Leclerc faced strategic challenges. Ferrari chose to pit Hamilton and Leclerc from second and fifth positions, respectively. However, this decision proved costly for Hamilton, who received a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane. This penalty demoted him to fifth place, behind his teammate Leclerc, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished sixth.
Verstappen maintained his second-place finish after a strong final stint, while Antonelli successfully defended his position against Hamilton on the track. Antonelli’s performance extended his championship lead to 50 points over Hamilton and 59 points over George Russell. Russell, who stalled at the start of the race, managed to recover to finish seventh.
Hamilton’s race included losing time early on while battling Verstappen, who executed a notable move on Hamilton into Turn 1. The seven-time world champion missed another opportunity for a win, with Ferrari’s strategy not optimising his race. Meanwhile, the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad engaged in a race-long battle with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg, with Lawson ultimately finishing ahead of Hulkenberg and Lindblad in the points-paying positions.
Norris expressed his satisfaction with his performance, commenting that his pace was among the best he had ever had, and the car felt excellent to drive. He added that he felt very confident during the race. The Formula 1 season is scheduled to resume after the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix from August 21-23.
