The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced that the Brazil senior men’s national team will play an international friendly against India on October 3, 2026, in Kolkata. This fixture is set to be one of the most significant matches in Indian football history, with the five-time world champions facing the Blue Tigers at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, also known as Salt Lake Stadium.
The match will mark the first time Brazil’s senior men’s national team plays on Indian soil. It also represents the highest-ranked opposition India has faced since the FIFA World Ranking was introduced in 1992, with Brazil currently ranked fifth globally.
Mr. M Satyanarayan, AIFF Deputy Secretary General, described the event as an “extraordinary moment” that will become a “landmark chapter” for Indian football. The announcement follows days of speculation regarding Brazil’s proposed visit to India, with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirming the details.
Brazil’s Connection with Indian Fans

The bond between Kolkata and Brazilian football dates back to 1977, when Pelé visited the city with New York Cosmos to play against Mohun Bagan, an event that remains a defining moment in Indian football history.
The discussions between the CBF and Indian stakeholders reportedly began during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Brazil’s interest in playing in India gained momentum after their World Cup campaign garnered significant support from Indian fans, with widespread social media sharing of visuals depicting packed screenings, murals, and enthusiastic supporters across the country.
Preparation and Logistics
The upcoming match is part of FIFA’s new “Super FIFA Window,” an extended international period allowing national teams to play multiple matches. Before their arrival in India, Brazil is scheduled to play two friendlies in Australia. These matches include a game against the Socceroos on September 25 in Townsville and another on September 29 in Brisbane.
The CBF released a statement expressing their eagerness for the match in Kolkata, highlighting it as an “unprecedented chapter” in their history. They acknowledged India as a country with a vast international fanbase for the Brazilian national team, which has followed Brazilian football with immense affection and passion for generations.
